But opening a restaurant isn’t so easy when you have no experience, so he started as a dishwasher. He worked his way up the ranks of a few local restaurants before going in with his friend on a one-off restaurant called Five Loaves Café downtown. “It was $43,000 to buy the owner out of his half. To me, you might as well have said a million dollars,” Fischbein recalled. Today, Fischbein’s partner has moved away, and Fischbein is at the helm of seven restaurants in the Glowfisch Hospitality Group. With his wife and daughter, Fischbein lives on Sullivan’s Island on family property that his grandfather bought in the 1940s.
