Sullivan's Island Winter-Spring 2019-20
28 www.SullivansIslandMagazine.com | www.SullivansIslandHomes.com A uthor Josephine Humphreys bookended her published works with her fourth novel, which was the one that she wanted to write from the beginning. Though Humphreys still writes, she is no longer publishing. “Writing is the only thing I really truly love to do. … I always have. Well, that or spend time with my children.” Humphreys started and regularly contributes to the Facebook group “Charleston History Before 1945,” followed by over 25,000 people. “I chose the year of my birth for the group so that none of the posts would be memories from me. The group opens up some stories we know but also many hidden stories — stories that we don’t know because they were mostly forgotten or not written down in accessible forms.” Humphreys’ family has been tied to Sullivan’s for over a century. She and her husband became permanent residents in 1990 after rebuilding her family home that Hugo had destroyed. Photo by Jess Wood. . lli I l .
