13 www.SullivansIslandMagazine.com | www.SullivansIslandHomes.com T he Coste family, planted firmly on the island for four generations before Hal Coste was born in 1946, owned what is now two lots side by side – but at the time of purchase in 1908, it was considered just one lot. “My grandfather, a commander of the Coast Guard station here on the island, bought the original lot for about $1,000,” Hal remarked, pausing to take a refreshing sip of cola in his eclectic living room. Hal used his carpentry skills to craft a bachelor’s pad from the shack in the yard. Today, little touches that denote his love for Sullivan’s Island are everywhere in the revamped house he shares with his wife, Karen: old maps of the beachfront; scenic photography; collected seashells. Hal and Karen’s daughter, Charlotte, recently gave birth to a son – the 6th Coste generation to be born on Sullivan’s Island. We Are Sullivan’s Island
