14 www.SullivansIslandMagazine.com | www.SullivansIslandHomes.com W hen Mary Blanchard’s daddy decided to live on the beach, he purchased a lot that cost $500 in 1938. It was a family project in progress – C.W. Blanchard had built the house, along with several others between Stations 20 and 22. “This is where my daddy and his father, his mother and his siblings lived,” she said, gesturing around at 2002 Central Ave., where she currently resides. “But we moved to 2115 Pettigrew St. in 1938, and I lived there for 50 years.” Mary loved the house on Pettigrew and its proximity to the sand and water. She recounted summer afternoons with her brothers and sisters, playing in the sunshine until her mother rang a bell to come inside. Today, only 2002 Central is left of the three homes that Mary’s parents owned. The house was destroyed during Hurricane Hugo. However, Mary restored it and lives there happily. Her remaining siblings – pictured here is John Blanchard – visit her often. . li I l . We Are Sullivan’s Island
