11 www.SullivansIslandMagazine.com | www.SullivansIslandHomes.com A dele Tobin grew up spending summers on Sullivan’s Island – her grandparents had a house at Station 24. And even though she “went away,” for college, she knew she’d return to the island as an adult. What she did not know at the time was that she’d become a potter. “I was living in D.C. and got a job as a night chef,” she said. “A co-worker knew a potter who needed an apprentice. I ended up being her apprentice for almost four years.” When Adele returned to Sullivan’s Island, she initially ran her pottery business out of two old school buses until the current studio was built. She taught pottery to kids on the island for 35 years and continues to create custom pieces out of clay. “I also spend a lot of time playing guitar, piano and ukulele,” she said, adding that she and her husband Bob performed as a duet for 30 years and continue to jam out regularly.
