Sullivan’s Island was a bit different in those days, of course – the flora grew wild and ripe for the taking before the manicured Middle Street we know today emerged. Clarence’s grandfather purchased a home at 2018 Gull Drive – “but the family was here on the island long before then,” he commented – which later became the home of Clarence, his parents, seven brothers and seven sisters. His current home at 1001 Osceola Ave. was bequeathed to him by a dear friend whose yard he worked in as a young boy. And while the years spent as a U.S. Marine, between 1976 and 1982, were fulfilling and took him “to a billion places,” the longing to come home to Sullivan’s Island remained at the forefront. “I always knew I’d come back,” he said. “Everyone knew everyone; everyone got along.
