Sullivan's Island Magazine April 2018

13 www.SullivansIslandMagazine.com | www.SullivansIslandHomes.com P olly Wurthmann’s husband, Bert, first came to Sullivan’s Island with his parents at 4 years old. When Polly and Bert got married 65 years ago, the island was quite different. “Times have changed a lot,” Polly said. “There was just one policeman on Sullivan’s Island back then. And when we built this house in 1973, there were no other houses around it.” The Wurthmanns owned a drugstore, Bert’s Pharmacy, for many years – the neon green light spelling the word “Prescriptions” is still hanging in their home. Later, Bert’s Bar took the spot once the drugstore closed. After Bert Wurthmann passed away in 2005, Home Team BBQ leased the building, and the family decided to enjoy a quiet lifestyle. “I worked in the pharmacy, taught school, taught dance and raised five children over those years,” Polly declared. “These days, I like to work in the yard. I still love to be outside all the time.” . lli I l i . | . lli I l . We Are Sullivan’s Island
