A landscape artist and native of the Carolina coast, Mickey Williams grew up on IOP and attended Sullivan’s Island Elementary. “My dad grew up here; my grandfather operated the Ben Sawyer bridge,” he explained. “I had a great childhood living on the islands.” Mickey described himself as a “self taught” artist who loved coloring books and watercolors as a child. After Hurricane Hugo devastated the coast in 1989, he eschewed returning to college and started creating art full-time instead. “I got a lucky break with Piccolo Spoleto that next spring, and I’ve sold every painting I’ve done ever since,” he said. “Now I feel like I’m starting the second half of my career – painting portraits and writing novels,” he added with a crafty grin.
