A coastal resident since 1949, Tom’s years growing up and attending Sullivan’s Island Elementary were spent in that idyllic island fashion: playing in the forests, playing baseball at the old baseball field, even watching “The Blob” at the old movie theater. In 1963, he and a few pals started the Carolina Coast Surf Club. “We started the club in the basement of this house I’m remodeling now. I was the president of the club for 50 years,” said Tom, who still enjoys catching waves. Though Tom said all his kids and grandkids live in Houston, he hopes his efforts to expand the family abode will beckon them to the island. “I’d love to have my hands full once in a while,” he said. . lli I l i . | . lli I l .
