A native Virginian, King was a science teacher and grew up loving all things marine- and art-related. “I look through the lens of science and art and help students to engage and connect to the things that matter,” she smiled. She was instrumental in the design of the new, much- touted building that opened in 2014. “What a great experience to go through its design,” King said. King likes to incorporate the bigger picture of how our world fits together. “I use the coastal environment as a pipeline to get people to think critically. It’s not learning the names of different fish. … but it’s asking, ‘How can I be helpful?’ ‘What happens at the Wando port?’ ‘How does this relate to math?’” she explained. “On a daily basis, I like talking to students, asking them questions and inspiring them to think.” We Are Sullivan’s Island Photo by Jess Wood.
