Sullivan's Island Winter-Spring 2018-19

19 www.SullivansIslandMagazine.com | www.SullivansIslandHomes.com T wenty-eight years ago, Dawn Davis began a job as a seasonal ranger with the National Park Service at Fort Sumter National Monument, and the rest is history – literally. Now its public affairs officer, Davis has been privy to opportunities that history buffs only dream about. For three years, she lived in the island’s historic lifesaving station. “It was park housing, and I needed a place to stay; I was able to walk my daughter to daycare, I worked just down the street and I had the incredible privilege of having the lighthouse in my backyard,” she recalled. From the deck of the NPS boat, Davis watched as the famed H.L. Hunley submarine was raised from the ocean floor, and, amid preparations for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War at Fort Sumter and the centennial celebration of the NPS, she also was involved in the design of the 2016 South Carolina quarter. “The mint asked what our vision was for the back of the quarter, and I thought, ‘What could be more appropriate than Sgt. Jasper saving the flag?’” she said of a defining moment in 1776 at what is now Fort Moultrie. “It just made sense – I really wanted Fort Moultrie to have a chance to shine.” . lli I l i . | . lli .
