Her diligence building the framework for this issue shines, and our staff wishes her the best of luck as she continues to grow in her career. Great job, Helen – we’ll miss you! Now, let me introduce myself. I’ve been writing for these publications for several years. Though I grew up just over the bridge, Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palms are in my bones. I remember the Ben Sawyer Bridge being the sole gateway to this quiet little island paradise as a kid. We’d take the boat up to Capers and Dewees, camping and climbing through the boneyard beaches that dot the coastline, or we’d spend hours catching sharks at The Grillage. My first job was on the Isle of Palms in what is now Morgan Creek Grill, and I will always remember the free feeling cresting over the top of the Connector with windows down, music up and the ocean straight ahead. Those were fun years. I spent a lot of time on these islands as a teen, and even now in my adult life, the short hop, skip and jump over the Intracoastal is where I am in my happiest place. I’m sipping coffee and typing away on my laptop in the open window at The Co-Op, forever exploring the forts and trekking the gullies with my kids, enjoying live music on Front Beach and taking the surfboard out with my husband when the waves are good enough. There remains on Sullivan’s Island a secret spot – or not so secret these days, it seems – where a few moments perched on a rock at the edge of the harbor, sucking in the salty air and watching the juxtaposition of nature and city lights and cargo ships and hermit crabs is all you need to feel just right. I’m honored to represent Sullivan’s Island Magazine and Isle of Palms Magazine – to help tie the islands’ community, businesses and visitors alike together in some positive way that brings us all a little closer.
