Clients that receive our services are going to be eligible based on their household income.” When those asking for help don’t qualify, it’s generally because they live outside Charleston County or their income exceeds the established threshold. In those cases, the team at Charleston Pro Bono refers the applicants to other organizations whose programs can help. Most of the legal aid offered by Charleston Pro Bono is provided by in-house staff attorneys Michael W. Harrington and Nicole Paluzzi, but sometimes cases are referred to private attorneys who agree to work pro bono. “We do about 50 outreach events a year,” Lietzow said. One of those is Lawyers in the Library, where attorneys present hour-long programs such as “Understanding Your Lease” at Charleston County’s Salthouse Catering is ready for guests to arrive in one of the Art on the Beach tour homes.
