I sat at my desk and began to brainstorm story ideas for our Sullivan’s Island Magazine . After shuffling a few ideas around in my head, I reached out to our designated “Island historian,” Hal Coste, hoping to pick his knowledgeable mind and gather a few leads. Instead of dragging our discussion out over a lengthy phone call, Hal asked me what I was doing “right now” and “if I had time for a boat ride.” I thought to myself, “Who doesn’t have time for a boat ride?” This was considered work after all, right? I did not regret my choice to go. And if you ever get an invite to tour Sullivan’s Island’s waterways in one of Hal’s restored boats, you, too, will consider it an honor and find a renewed joy in living so near – or on – such a beautiful Island. The slightly cool fall temperature and morning sun were perfect for our high-tide ride. We passed sights such as Danny McBride’s dock and the house where Bill Murray’s children frequented; we stopped and looked at shells on Ingram’s Island; he told me the story of the old ferry and trolley system when we passed those spots; and I saw the very tip of the island. These are really only a handful of things I learned that day. The point is, even just for a couple of hours on a Tuesday morning, I was completely immersed in Sullivan’s Island and its history, beauty and magnificence. I learned things in an interactive way, and, as a non-native, I truly appreciated the tour and was humbled by the sites around me. The content in this issue, and every issue, I’d like to think, reflects that beauty, history and magnificence. Sullivan’s Island is a force to be reckoned with, and I’ve heard nothing but the best things from all who visit. So I like to think it’s my small but important duty to maintain that reputation by curating the most pertinent, up-to-date articles in Sullivan’s Island Magazine while simultaneously keeping the history of the island alive. Enjoy this issue. Enjoy the island. And maybe, if you have the time, take a boat ride! Until next time, Helen Harris Editor@MountPleasantMagazine.com [ From the Editor ]
