George Durst Jr. , was 7 years old when his family moved to town in the early 1950s. “It was great,” he reminisced. “People rode horses on the beach, dogs ran free, the paperboy rode a horse to deliver the paper. There was a vegetable man and a seafood man that would come to sell their things, and, on the back of the island, there were a few small farms.” He enjoyed riding his bike to school and walking to violin lessons. For a long time, his father, Dr. George Durst Sr., was the only doctor East of the Cooper. When Dr. Durst Jr., joined the practice after serving as a major in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he was one of only three doctors in the area. Today, Durst Family Practice is in its third generation. Dr. Durst loves sharing the joy of music and plays violin in the SouthCoast Symphony Orchestra alongside his wife, Dawn, who is a principal violinist. The Charleston-wide group puts on four to five concerts each year. “Sullivan’s Island has changed a lot – it’s definitely not what it used to be, but I love what I do, and I can be here in five minutes. I’m not going anywhere,” he said. . lli I l i . | . lli I l . We Are Sullivan’s Island Photo by Jess Wood.
