O ne of the perks of being the editor of a magazine is the chance to give yourself an assignment you know will be interesting. There are numerous interesting things about Sullivan’s Island, of course – but, after preparing the issue in your hands, I’ve realized that the people who live there are the key. Publisher Bill Macchio and I came up with the idea to do “We Are Sullivan’s Island,” a photo essay featuring a few iconic residents in their truest forms, after a spontaneous trip to Redux Contemporary Art Center in downtown Charleston. It was at Redux that we had the pleasure of meeting photographer Mark Stetler and his partner, Caroline Knopf, also a photographer. Mark and Caroline were immediately intrigued by the project, and Mark generously offered to take photos of the five locals you might recognize in these pages. As for me, I had the chance to connect with these five folks and learn more about them as well. It was a sincere treat to go inside their homes, view their photos and mementos and hear their stories about Sullivan’s Island as it was decades ago. I can’t tell you how lucky I felt pulling up a chair in Mary Blanchard’s historic family home to hear all about the many days she spent beachcombing with her brothers and sisters; or how much fun it was meeting Adele Tobin and seeing her magical pottery studio; or the joy of sitting on Ruth Knopf ’s front porch and looking out into a yard of gorgeous blooms. Elsewhere in the issue, we read Linda Conrad’s essay about why she loves to visit “the point” of Sullivan’s Island; we learn interesting and perhaps new information regarding the historic pest house; we get to know local artisan Austin Norvell; plus more. Although the pace at this time of year is slower, it can be perfect for long walks on a less-populated shoreline, enjoying a book from Poe Library with a cup of hot tea or simply reflecting on the bounty of nature. However you choose to spend the season, we hope that your copy of Sullivan’s Island Magazine goes with you. Yours, Denise K.
