Our Sullivan’s Island Neigh bors Rob Darby Lives in: Sullivan’s Island. From: Mount Pleasant, SC. Education/experience: B.S. in chemical engineering from Clemson University; J.D. from University of Virginia. Employment: Previously with Irell & Manella LLP and FirstKey Homes. Recently admitted to the SC Bar and intending to return to the practice of law in 2019.  Interests/hobbies: Volleyball, DIY house projects and exploring the beautiful surroundings of the Lowcountry. Your perfect weekend: I have a soon-to-be 3-year-old daughter, and she is the source of most of my smiles. We love getting out to the beach during off-leash hours in the morning with my four-legged child, Buddy. Then maybe a little boat time and some volleyball thrown in to get in some exercise. We also enjoy an occasional trip downtown for Roti Rolls at the Marion Square Farmer’s Market or Second Sunday on King. A “beach read” you recommend: “Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate. Favorite place to eat on the island: Obstinate Daughter. Favorite quote or philosophy: “Life’s too short to sweat the small stuff.” I seem to encounter far too many people who don’t realize how fortunate they are to have their health or their friends and family or life’s basic needs. Joan C. Pittman Lives in: Sullivan’s Island. From: Grew up in southwestern Pennsylvania, east of Pittsburg. Education/experience: B.A. from Vassar College; M.A. from University of Chicago. Employment: Medical University of South Carolina – lab technologist (electron microscopy) and editorial assistant. Director of outreach ministries at St. Andrew’s Church in Mount Pleasant in the 1980s. Interests/hobbies: Making music has been a lifelong joy. Currently, I sing with the St. Stephen’s choir in Charleston. Reading and writing: Member of a monthly book club and two writing groups that meet weekly at the Poe Library and Isle of Palms Recreation Department. Porch-sitting with friends for lively conversation is always a delight. Your perfect weekend: Going with Fred, my husband, for a long weekend to New York City to see a couple plays, visit the planetarium or Museum of Natural History and meet friends for a meal. A “beach read” you recommend: Sue Monk Kidd’s “The Secret Life of Bees” or “An Invention of Wings” or “The Boys in the Boat” by Daniel Brown. Favorite place to eat on the islands: Long Island Café. Favorite quote or philosophy: “God’s love streams amazingly everywhere.” Betty Harley Lives in: Sullivan’s Island. From: Stanley, NC. Education/experience: BSN from UNC-Chapel Hill. Employment: Worked as a nurse specializing in infection control from 1978 to 2006. Interests/hobbies: Painting, reading, playing bridge and traveling. Your perfect weekend: Staying home on the beach, sipping a glass of wine while watching the sunset and talking to fun people. On Sunday, I love going to service at the Circular Congregational Church in Charleston.  A “beach read” you recommend: “Slaughterhouse-Five” by Kurt Vonnegut. Favorite place to eat on the island: At home. Favorite quote or philosophy: Do the easy thing first. Steve Harry Lives in: Sullivan’s Island. From: Augusta, GA. Education/experience: Major in business from Georgia Southern University. Employment: Senior managing partner at ECE (EastCoast Entertainment) for 32 years. Interests/hobbies: Sullivan’s Island history, UGA Bulldawgs, island sunsets. Hobbies are fly fishing in the mountains, golf and walking on the beach.
