I can picture the 4- or 5-year- old version of myself and my mom with our backs parallel to the harshest of the sun’s summer rays. We stay that way for an hour or so – our eyes intently focused on the menagerie of shells, sharks’ teeth and other creatures the tides wash up and draw back into the sea. It was fun as a child: to be on vacation, to see the vastness of the ocean, to bring home special treasures to keep in jars around the house … and to see that collection grow year after year. I may no longer be a child, but my love of the beach, the ocean and the many creatures to be found within it and along its shores still amazes me and persists, even living in a coastal town day after day. And I am thankful to still share a love of “shelling” with my mom. … In part, actually, she even inspired me to include a shell guide in this edition of our island magazine. We are both fortunate to live on the coast, surrounded by extraordinary beaches, and, while we both enjoy finding beautiful shells, we often wonder what the species and specific names are. I look forward to many beach trips, locally and in the St. Pete area where my mom lives this summer, a bit more educated in the way of shell species. More than shells, however, this island issue captures the love of Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms beaches, the experiences everyone has here and the importance of maintaining their beauty. And because of my work with some incredible writers and resources in this issue, I’ll remember the importance of every person’s part in the ecosystem, how blessed we are with the shorelines that surround us, and, yes, I’ll probably be looking for shells a bit longer with my mom, back parallel to the sun (with sunscreen, of course). Until next time, Helen Harris Editor@MountPleasantMagazine.com [ From the Editor ]
