18 www.SullivansIslandMagazine.com | www.SullivansIslandHomes.com History Reinhabited A long with the dome home, the beautiful 3,530 square-foot, five-bedroom, three-bath house at 1109 Middle St. overlooking Fort Sumter and the Charleston Harbor is one of the most iconic homes on Sullivan’s Island. But the home’s gorgeous exterior, its stunning location and its use in the 2010 film “Dear John,” a romantic drama starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, are just a part of what makes this such an interesting domicile. The residence, also known as the Waring-Salmons House, is in the Moultrieville Historic District, a small collection of houses situated along Middle Street and Osceola Avenue, between Stations 11 and 12, that were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in September 2007, according to the South Carolina By Colin McCandless Department of Archives and History. William H. Brawley (1841-1916), a Civil War Confederate veteran who later served as a U.S. congressman and a federal judge, originally built the house in 1867. His main residence was in Charleston, but, at the time, Sullivan’s Island was more of a resort community catering to downtown residents such as Brawley and his family. According to the Moultrieville Historic District National Register nomination form, the area is significantly historical because “this district includes houses from the earliest period of resort housing on the island.” In 1910, Thomas Richard Waring – who worked as an editor for the News and Courier – and Laura Witte Waring, who are believed to be the second owners after the Brawley family, bought the home as a summer house. It remained New Owners at 1109 Middle St. Photos cour tesy of Rosamond Lawson.
