Sullivan's Island Magazine Spring/Summer 2019
12 www.SullivansIslandMagazine.com | www.SullivansIslandHomes.com Dogs of Sullivan’s Island By Tonya McGue D ogs love island life. They ride on golf carts, retrieve tennis balls from backyard pools, frolic in the waves and become regulars at the local pub. According to Sullivan’s Island Town Administrator Andy Benke, 2,600 canines are registered to play on Sullivan’s Island, but only 448 lucky dogs call the island home. Below are seaside tales from five of the four- legged, tail-wagging residents. BOOMER COLLINS Age : 10. Breed : Yellow Labrador retriever. Owner : Brian Collins. I am known as the mayor of Sullivan’s Island. My office is at Dunleavy’s Pub on top of the picnic table. My picture is on the wall. We celebrate my birthdays there, too. The staff and regulars sing “Happy Birthday” to me while I drool over a juicy, rare hamburger with a candle on top. I know the word “pub” as well as other dogs know the word “treat.” Sometimes I conduct business on the beach. If I hear two dogs woofing at each other, I run toward them to check it out. They know I am the mayor, so Five Furry Faces and a Glimpse at Their Beachy Lives Boomer lies comfortably on a table outside Dunleavy’s Pub. Photo by Jeanne Taylor.
