I ’ve always found this quote by Vincent Van Gogh to be a heartening reminder that everyone is essentially an artist. Whether we’re painters, musicians, writers or magazine editors, there’s an artistic talent or sincere love hidden inside of every person. In fact, showcasing people and what they love is one of the many reasons we began the “We are Sullivan’s Island” series. This is the second issue of Sullivan’s Island Magazine where we’ve featured this photo essay series, and it just gets better and better. For this issue, I had the sincere joy of meeting a few more iconic islanders, spending one-on-one time inside their homes and listening to stories of bygone days. In many cases, these locals were kind enough to show me their own art forms. I heard a beautiful piece of music by Gershwin on Carol Antman’s piano; I saw Mickey Williams’ latest landscape painting propped upon an easel; I conjured a mental image of Tom Proctor surfing teal colored waves in Costa Rica. This series wouldn’t be possible without the talents of two other artistic colleagues: Mark Stetler and Thomas Runion, whose photo and video skills will help you see and feel the island and make these tales come to life. I sincerely appreciate both of them – as well as every contributor to this issue. Elsewhere in our Spring/Summer edition, you’ll learn of a treasure that might just be buried on the island, take a walk through the history of the Pitt Street Bridge, meet new Police Chief Christopher Griffin and more. This is one of the best times of the year to be on Sullivan’s Island. It’s warm outside but not boiling hot yet; there’s a cool breeze on the restaurant porches; and the kids (and adults) are ready for summer. It’s easy to see why so many of these locals that I interview refer to the island as “Mayberry by the Sea.” On behalf of everyone here at the magazine, we hope you enjoy this issue and the sunny weather ahead.
