Sullivan's Island Magazine Summer/Fall 2018

9 www.SullivansIslandMagazine.com | www.SullivansIslandHomes.com While most people typically consider a house to be a barrier from the outdoor world, this shell-like home was designed with nature in mind and to be “one with nature”– not only to protect residents from the strongest storms but also to admire the island around it. “It is designed to be as weatherproof as possible. The intention was very much to create a home to withstand hurricane-force wind,” Royal explained. The open layout and unique architectural features of the home will amaze anyone who steps into the unassuming exterior of the dome house, with its concrete- instilled shell. Royal explained: “The floors are hung from that shell. That means that you can have a very open layout with views that really maximize the beach and nature. …The house most perfectly mimics nature surrounding it more than any other.” Location, beauty and views aside, you may be wondering how the dome house faired with a recent storm such as Hurricane Matthew. The future owner can take comfort in the fact that Royal hosted the WCIV ABC News 4 crew at the home during its coverage of the storm, and, in Royal’s words of assurance: “The house hasn’t really been challenged. … It was built because of Hurricane Hugo, which knocked down its predecessor in 1989. And so it was built to replace that house and to give my grandparents peace of mind that they would never have to go through that process of rebuilding again.” So is the “Eye of the Storm” for you? Maybe you appreciate optimal location, fantastic views and original architecture or altogether crave something a bit “off the beaten path.” Ultimately, whoever the new owner will be, he or she certainly will have an eye for beauty and the natural world. Royal explained, “I want to connect with a person who really falls in love with the house and who views it as not only a highly functional and efficient home but also as a work of art and a sculpture. … because I think of it as a kind of sculpture on the beach.” For more information, visit www.pareto.gr .
