Sullivan's Island Magazine Summer/Fall 2018

For entertainment, we made necklaces from the fruit of the chinaberry trees. We loved to dress up with leaves. We couldn’t use Spanish moss as some children do because we didn’t have it here on the island.” In the summertime, the Atlantic Hotel’s 100 rooms and two bathhouses were usually full, and the hotel would host bands for the guests. Mueller and her friends would go listen to the music, too. There was no heat in the rooms, so, in the winter, the hotel would have dances to bring in money. Mueller remembered that the Army provided most of her entertainment as a child – baseball and football games and other activities. They also held parades and concerts. “It would have been a dull life if it hadn’t been for the Army being there on the island. There wasn’t anything to do in Mount Pleasant then either, and so they all came here to enjoy the entertainment,” she reminisced. Selling on Sullivan’s?
